Engineers at the University of California San Diego have developed a new type of radar that can help autonomous vehicles drive safely in adverse weather conditions. The new technology improves the imaging capabilities of existing radar sensors, enabling them to accurately predict the shape and size of objects on the road.
Navigation is difficult under atmospheric conditions, and lidar technology detects and ranges distance by reflecting laser beams to surrounding objects. When the weather is clear, the technology is capable of creating high-resolution 3D images. But there is fog, rain, dust or at night, it can not play a performance. Radar technology also faces some limitations. The radar works by emitting radio waves and can detect objects in any weather, but can only capture a partial picture of the road. The new system includes two radar sensors mounted on the hood of the car. The distance between the two radar sensors is the average width of the car (1.5 meters). When the radar sensor is placed in this way, it allows the vehicle to see more space and detail than a single radar sensor.
